In the UK the international watchdog Equalities and Human Rights Commission has described the neglect and abuse of elderly people in care homes as “torture” with recent reports citing that more than half of the residents in homes are denied basic care. Of those elderly living in the 20,731 care, residential and nursing homes in the UK, it is estimated that 40,000 exist in social isolation and that 13,000 have no “kith and kin” whatsoever. The Relatives & Residents Association (R&RA) cites the human diaspora as a major factor with many families no longer living in the same country let alone town or home.
